Family pension
Paid to the spouse or eligible family after the pensioner dies. It is a share of the last pay drawn.
| Family pension | Now | New |
|---|---|---|
| Normal family pension (30% of last pay, ₹9,000 to ₹75,000) | ₹9,000 | ₹23,130 |
| Enhanced family pension (50% of last pay, up to ₹1,25,000) | ₹9,000 | ₹23,150 |
You entered a pension, so last pay is taken as twice the pension: ₹18,000. Enter your last pay for a closer figure.
Which one applies
- Enhanced: if the employee dies in service, for 10 years. If death comes after retirement, for 7 years or until age 67, whichever earlier.
- Normal: from the end of the enhanced period, and for the rest of the family pension period.
How this is worked out
- Basic pension × fitment factor, rounded up to the next rupee. The minimum and maximum pension scale by the same factor.
- Additional pension is a percentage of basic pension by age (80+: 20%, rising to 100% at 100), recalculated on the new pension.
- Dearness relief (DR) follows the DA rate today. It restarts at 0% on the new pension.
- Family pension uses last pay × fitment factor, rounded up to the next ₹100, with its own minimum and maximum.
Assumptions used: assumption A1 assumption A4 assumption A9
Pre-2016 pensioners
The 7th Pay Commission fixed pre-2016 pensions in two ways. The pensioner got whichever came out higher. Treat the 8th Pay Commission the same way only if the Government says so.
- Pre-2016 pensioners: 2.57 multiplier. 2.57 x pension fixed at 6th CPC implementation, rounded up to the next rupee, stepped up to the minimum.
- Pre-2016 pensioners: notional fixation. Notional pay fixation in 7th CPC Pay Matrix as on 1.1.2016 (through each intervening Pay Commission); 50% of notional pay = pension, 30% = family pension (50% for enhanced family pension period)
Higher of the two applies.
Commutation
You can commute up to 40% of your pension for a lump sum. The commuted part is restored after 15 years. This page does not change your figure for commutation; it is for information only.
Who this estimate is for
This page is for retired central government employees and for families who receive family pension. Enter your basic pension, or your last basic pay if that is what you remember, and the page shows an estimate at a fitment factor you choose.
Your total pension has three parts: basic pension, additional pension if you are 80 or older, and dearness relief (DR). DR is the pension version of DA. It rises with the cost of living, and today it is paid on top of basic pension.
When a new Pay Commission starts, the DA already paid is folded into the new basic. That is why DR restarts at zero while the basic pension jumps. In 2016 the Government set the minimum pension to move by the same factor as pay, 2.57. This page assumes the same rule again.
Nothing here is decided yet. The fitment factor, the start date and the rules for pensioners all depend on the 8th Pay Commission and the Government. Use the slider to see a range.
